...do you ever wonder if you did all you could with what you were given?
New Year’s Eve seems a timely occasion to post my review of a book which should be required reading for everyone—especially young women in that critical stage of life post-high school and pre-marriage. John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life is…what words can I use? Don't we all wonder if we wasted some of the gifts God has entrusted to us? Are we being the good and faithful servants He desires and deserves?
I wish I could retype the entire chapter entitled “Magnifying Christ through pain and death.” I want to read it so many times I can recite it from memory. Here is a taste—though you really must read it all to get the full impact:
Untold Christians waste their lives trying to escape the cost of love. They do not see that it is always worth it. There is more of God’s glory to be seen and savored through suffering than through self-serving escape…God designs that tribulations intensify our hope for the glory of God (page 73).
Seriously. You will regret it someday if you do not read this book. The new gift edition is ideal—portable, wears well even when read many times, and the bonus DVD of John Piper’s teaching is excellent. However, if finances are tight you can still enjoy the entire book online. Visit Desiring God ministries and find the library. One way or another, make it your resolution to read Don’t Waste Your Life in 2006.
