To Know God and Believe Him

The day after I returned from Japan I pulled Beth Moore’s Breaking Free: Making Liberty in Christ a Reality in Life 10-week Bible study off my shelf. Two and a half years had passed since I first went through the study, and I had grown hungry for intelligent, thoughtful study. My mom is going through Beth’s new study on The Patriarchs with some friends at Avant, and raving about how good it is. I want to do that one as well, but before I could gain the most benefit from it, I wanted to start back at square one and do some internal housecleaning.

If you have never studied through one of Beth Moore’s Bible studies I strongly encourage you to pick one up and give it a month’s try. They are not expensive, and as Bible studies go, they are one of the best I’ve ever seen. I’ll admit they are the only ones I’ve ever felt any need to go back and do again—in Japan our Bible study group was working through a series from Rick Warren (Mr. The Purpose-Driven Life)’s church and while it had some good content, it just cannot hold a candle to Beth Moore in my ever-so-humble opinion.

I will probably be sharing some quotes from this study over the next few weeks. Let’s start with this one from page 31:

God wants to do in your life what your eyes have never seen, your ears have never heard, and your mind has never conceived. But just as the children of Israel were held captive by the Babylonians, areas of captivity can keep us from living out the reality of Isaiah 64:4 and 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Take a moment to reread our definition of captivity from the introduction: “A Christian is held captive by anything that hinders the abundant and effective Spirit-filled life God planned for her.” One of the most effective ways we can detect an area of captivity is to measure whether or not we are enjoying the benefits God intends for every child of God.

This week we are studying what these benefits are, and I see areas where they are not the living reality in my life that they should be. But even as I’ve been discouraged to see areas of my life which are not free from sin, I have the comfort of God’s Spirit to enable me to overcome the “yoke of slavery” (Gal. 5:1).
