Grandmother's Hope Chest

Grandmother's Hope Chest is a series of twelve books designed to entertain a young girl and teach her to sew by hand. As Grandmother and Lucie go through the hope chest together, the items they come across become special projects for Lucie to recreate...the ultimate goal of this book is to help young girls and their mothers take their "first stitches" together, to create a lifelong joy in hand sewing, and to show through example how special and unique a hope chest can be.

I may be a decade and a half older than the focused audience for this series, but after spending a quiet half hour enjoying the stories and peaceful, lovely illustrations in these hardcover picture books, I knew I had to share them with you YLCF readers. Grandmother's Hope Chest books 1 and 2 from Hope Chest Legacy combine a charming story with instructions for basic hand sewing projects that anyone can complete.

Reading the first volume, The Running Rooster, brought back many bright memories from childhood days past. Summer days spent in our side yard with my cross stitch patterns and a lapful of embroidery floss, long car rides making friendship bracelets, talks with friends while tating lace or crocheting a quilt block. It is not just about the finished project: the process of creating hand-made useful items for the future or for gifts is in itself a worthy end.

Ohh, yes indeed! I look forward to the time when I can do some handicrafts again. My last project was a truly horrendous pink doll. While it was satisfying in its own odd way, I think I would like to embroider a pillow. Or something. :)

While I no longer have much time for hand projects and certainly never accumulated a "hope chest" full of them (I was always making gifts for people), I have always loved hand crafts and am amazed to find someone else who has done all the same things and even tatting! That's really a lost art! I learned from a 83 year old lady about 12 years ago.
