Sarah's Waves say..."Read It!"
by Sarah Roueche
I had always thought my hair was hopelessly straight. I spent my childhood
rolling my hair in foam curlers and dreaming of the day when I would be old
enough to get a perm. Little did I know that my hair had some hidden waves
which were just waiting for me to let them appear!
In August of 2004 my friend Melinda excitedly shared about a new method of
bringing out your natural curls. It was called the Curly Girl method and it
recommended getting rid of your shampoo and brush and using large amounts of
conditioner and gel instead. I was skeptical: "No shampoo?? That would never
work for me!"
Still, I resolved to give it a try. I was already accustomed to using gel, so the only difficult part was trying not to use shampoo. I tried it for a couple days, but I didn't quite have the process down and thus didn't notice much difference. So I gave in and shampooed thoroughly! However, I don't quit easily; on August 16th I determined I was going to give the method the three weeks that are recommended.
I was excited to notice that my hair was getting wavier by the end of the first week, but I was also discouraged because the attempt to wean my hair from shampoo didn't seem to be working. I gave it another week, though. To my joy my hair finally realized I wasn't going to abuse it with shampoo any longer, and began to be less and less oily! The last time I used shampoo was 47 days ago, and I haven't missed it in the slightest. The bottle is gathering dust in a remote corner of the bathroom! About a month after I began the routine I bought Lorraine Massey's book, and was freshly inspired. My opinion of it can be summed up by the following two words: READ IT!
My hair has never been more curly, healthy, and soft than it is right now. I just love it! It definitely makes me feel different; as Lorraine Massey says, it's "more than just hair.it's an attitude!"
