Turn Off the Boob Tube!

“TV-Free America”— Oxymoron? No, in fact it’s a national nonprofit organization that’s trying to get Americans in front of the tube.  In our TV-obsessed society the concept is dangerously close to heresy, but TVFA is marching on unafraid.  Billing themselves as “the environmental movement of the mind,” they focus on raising the awareness of the harmful aspects of television viewing and provide suggestions for TV alternatives—activities they hope will “lead to more literate, productive lives and engaged citizenship.”

For a week  in April over one million people participated in TVFA’s “National TV-Turnoff Week!”  They’re already busy planning next year’s turnoff for April 24-30, 1996.
