A Day At My School

Howdy! My name's Kate Vetter. I’m a 15-year-old, 10th grader from a sleepy little town in Illinois, where everybody knows everyone else's name.
I’m an only child, but we have one family cat named Cornfield (can you guess where we found her?) and a dog named Ferne.
Okay, you’re wondering about the Harley, right? No, actually we're not a homeschool biker family." But we do own a factory which makes saddle bags and tank trim pieces for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
We converted half of our factory into a house for us to live in, and the other half is where we make the bags. We have four employees who do the sewing, riveting, and fabric cutting right here in the building. These bags are shipped directly to Harley to be put on new motorcycles as they come off the assembly line.
My job is to manage the assembly of the tank trims. These 10" by 5" pieces of leather are cut here and then laced by 25 people in their own homes. Most of the people who do the lacing for us are home-school families who need a little extra income. Every Monday they come by the factory, and I issue them their parts for the week (on average about 20 per person). They bring me the parts that they have done the previous week and pick up their checks. This work, along with my responsibilities in shipping and receiving, makes up about 15 hours each week.
For school our family uses Far Above Rubies as a guide for high school activities and books, which we obtain from the library or friends. Saxon Math, Learning Language Arts Through Literature, and reprinted history books from the 1800s and Green leaf History are some of the other school books that we currently study.
My school week goes something like this: Mondays are dominated by work at the factory, so I usually only do math and then catch up on Tuesday. I like to learn a little about a lot of different things. Other than my normal school work, I am learning about meteorology, the study of the weather and the conditions that create it; first aid, and basic nursing care; and the history of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. I also play piano and enjoy exploring the inter-net.
On Thursday we have Cornerstone, where I have class with 26 other homeschoolers my age. I’ve known many of them my whole life. On Fridays we have Bible study with four other families.
Well, now you know a little bit about me, my family, and our business. Next time you see (or hear) a Harley roar by, think of the Vetters!
